Leeds grew rich on wool and cloth, and the money shows in its centre: the glass-roofed arcades of the Victoria Quarter, the domed Corn Exchange of 1864 and the tiled halls of Kirkgate Market are all still in daily use. On the redeveloped waterfront at Leeds Dock the Royal Armouries holds the national collection of arms and armour with free entry, and a short way north-west along the Aire the Cistercian ruins of Kirkstall Abbey, founded around 1152, stand in a public park with the Abbey House Museum opposite. Beyond the centre are the terraces and cafés of Headingley and Chapel Allerton, the parkland of Roundhay and the estate of Temple Newsam. The city works in any season, though summer brings outdoor festivals and cricket at Headingley, and December fills the arcades. Leeds station is one of the busiest in northern England, with direct trains to London in roughly two and a quarter hours, and Leeds Bradford Airport sits just north of the city. Harrogate, York and the Yorkshire Dales are all easy day trips. It suits apartment stays for couples, shopping weekends and travellers who want a base with a countryside edge.
