Do I need a car, or is the train enough?
High-speed and regional trains connect Rome, Florence, Venice, Milan, Naples and other cities quickly, so city-focused trips rarely need a car. For the Tuscan countryside, Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia and the lakes, a rental car gives you the most freedom, though the Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre are often easier by boat, bus or train than by car.
Which regions are best for a family holiday versus a couple's trip?
Families tend to favour farmhouse villas with pools in Tuscany and Umbria, Lake Garda's shallower shores and Puglia's beaches. Couples often prefer the Amalfi Coast, the Cinque Terre, Lake Como and city breaks in Rome, Florence or Venice, where the appeal is scenery, food and walkable historic centres.
